the spring i fell in love (poem)

there are gold flakes peppered into your skin, didn’t you notice?

didn’t you see them?

or were they made for my eyes only?

accessible through my field of vision

I can see you glowing

see the edges of your mouth curl in metallic praise because you’ve gotten what you wanted this time

you’ve won

look up

through

look out into abyss and wander off there

find the map

come closer

paint every line of your knuckles onto canvas from memory

you’ll forget the difference between them

and the valleys you once slept in

this is the world where my eyes change color

where we rest after the long journey to nirvana

where we are ra and ra is what we’ve created of ourselves

perfect

for just a little bit

to touch a flame

know that it chills at your impact

but just enough

to bite back

I’d like to think that was our first meeting

fingertips caressing embers back into blaze

how,

I wonder

did I know so well

as to touch

flame to wick

we knew each other already
